Likewise, introverts often emphasize how much they prepare for meetings, calls, presentations, etc. so that they perform at their best ( a side note: Meryl Streep is an introvert like many actors). Yet, despite careful preparation, you can't always anticipate what is thrown at you. Handling the moment sometimes trumps preparation.

She is my favorite actress. I am sure I’m not alone. It is not just that she is a gifted actor. Meryl Streep steps into the soul of every character she plays. This week she won yet another accolade for best actress. This time it was the Golden Globe for portraying Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Actors like Streep prepare extensively to take us into the world of that character. Likewise, introverts often emphasize how much they prepare for meetings, calls, presentations, etc. so that they perform at their best ( a side note: Meryl Streep is an introvert like many actors). Yet, despite careful preparation, you can’t always anticipate what is thrown at you. Handling the moment sometimes trumps preparation.

In this clip of her recent Golden Globes Acceptance Speech a great actress is a normal human being. In the blush of winning and kissing her way up to the stage, Ms. Streep forgot her glasses. So how did she handle it? She was refreshingly real (they bleeped out the “Oh ____” ), cracked some jokes and complimented the other nominees (some even more than once:)

I loved her rambling, laughing performance where she played the character she knows best: herself. Perhaps an extra glass of wine helped. Any scripted thank you she might have had was gone and there she was, like the rest of us, dealing with an “Oh ___” moment. I will take that real performance over a carefully rehearsed acceptance speech any day.

I once worked for a painfully introverted leader who was one of the most honorable people I've ever met. I learned a tremendous amount from him, not because of what he said, but because of who he was. And he didn't give me any verbal lessons about honor, it was transmitted in the way he carried himself. For the introverted leader, TELL Courage does not necessarily have to be done verbally.

I am so pleased at the reaction to my latest newsletter on courage. Author and consultant Bill Treasurer, the courage expert, shares so much wisdom about how we need to lean into courage every single day. He has a new dynamic training program that is getting rave reviews. I love his examples of companies like Dove and Domino’s Pizza and how their risks paid off.

Of course, I asked Bill about our fave topic: introverted leaders. Here is some of what he shared,

“……one of the main types of courage I talk about is called “TELL Courage” – the courage of “voice” and assertiveness. This is the courage of the truth-teller, and it’s very difficult to exhibit, particularly at lower levels in an organization. For the introverted leader, TELL Courage does not necessarily have to be done verbally. Sometimes it is best to talk less and express more. Writing a POV article for the company newsletter, for example, where the leader takes a bold stand, can be an expression of TELL Courage.”

I am relating this to the 3rd P in the 4 P’s model, PUSH. Leaders who stretch and grow are showing courage. What are you doing to show some courage today?

You go to networking events to connect for business, right? Wrong! If you build relationships first, the business will come. Show an interest in who the other person is and share some of yourself.

Certified Career Coach Hallie Crawford (and introvert, I might add) of Create Your Career Path attended a recent workshop I gave on the Introvert’s Career Path to Success. In it we discussed the “giving and getting agenda.” One of my favorite non-fluff networking books, Making Contacts Count (AMACOM, 2007) by Lynne Waymon and Anne Baber describes this concept beautifully.

Check out Hallie’s views on this topic in her brief video, Stop Talking Business at Networking Events. She also summarized her thoughts on her blog (which is full of practical tips).

We had coffee after the program to learn more about each other. Hallie is living her career dream and guiding others do the same. She showed a true interest in learning more about my speaking, coaching and writing on IL’s(Introverted Leaders). The cool thing? We already are supporting each other in our respective businesses. Building relationships first is truly the key – I love when this stuff works!

"[This] supports the claim that introverts, or their brains, might be indifferent to people — they can take them or leave them, so to speak. The introvert's brain treats interactions with people the same way it treats encounters with other, non-human information, such as inanimate objects for example," Inna Fishman said.
They concluded that, "The results strongly suggest that human faces, or people in general, hold more significance for extroverts, or are more meaningful for them."

A new study thinks so. In a paper presented at the American Psychological Association this month, Brains of Introverts Reveal Why They Prefer Being Alone a research team from the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in La Jolla, California conducted an intriguing study. Here are some excerpts from a write up in Live Science:

“They used a method known as the “oddball task” in which subjects see a series of very similar images, such as a bunch of blue cars, and then all of a sudden, a slightly different image appears, such as a red car. In the current experiment, subjects saw a series of male faces and every so often a female face appeared. They were also shown pictures of purple flowers interspersed with pictures of yellow ones.

Electrodes placed on the subjects’ scalps recorded the electrical activity in their brains, a technique known as electroencephalography, or EEG. The researchers studied a particular change in the brain’s electrical activity known as P300.

The higher subjects had scored on a test for extroversion, the greater their P300 response was to human faces. In other words, extroverts pay more attention to human faces (P300 can be seen as an indicator of human attention, or how fast their brains’ noticed that something has changed.) There was no link between scores on extroversion and the P300 response to flowers. Introverts had very similar P300 responses to both human faces and to flowers.”

“They (Introverts) just didn’t place a larger weight on social stimuli than they did on any other stimuli, of which flowers are one example,” said.

“[This] supports the claim that introverts, or their brains, might be indifferent to people — they can take them or leave them, so to speak. The introvert’s brain treats interactions with people the same way it treats encounters with other, non-human information, such as inanimate objects for example,” Inna Fishman said.

The researchers concluded, “The results strongly suggest that human faces, or people in general, hold more significance for extroverts, or are more meaningful for them.”

The ideas here should not be taken as absolutes but perhaps are true to some degree. Keep in mind that the sample size was small (only 28) and limited (ages 18-40) More research should be done on this hypothesis. But it is an interesting start.

A. Find what fits for you. My predecessor here ran fantastic all-staff meetings every month that were just jaw-droppingly good. She was just so magnetic. I realized pretty quickly that wasn’t a mantle I should try to shoulder. Again, doing it her way, not trying to be someone else.

Q. What’s your best advice to people who are becoming managers for the first time?

A. It’s important that you communicate clearly with people who are going to be reporting to you, that you be as open as possible about who you are, what they should know about you, what they should understand about you, and how you like to operate. Discussing your style is great. Modeling this openness probably helps her team be more open about their preferences. And they know how to approach her.

I remember learning that very early on in my own career — having to sit and think about what I needed to let people know about me. I even said to people that I’ve been told that I look angry a lot of the time, and I’m usually not. It’s just my face, so just don’t be put off by that. Confirms what introverts tell me. People paint all sorts of feelings and attitudes that aren’t there – sadness, depression, etc, Many female introverts say they are told they are “snobby and stuck up.”

Blogger Breanne Potter, formerly of the MBTI Blog and now of assessmentbuzz.com told me about the proposed APA (that's Psychiatric) definition of introversion for the new DSM. It really is, as she says, taking the concept of introversion backwards.

According to their proposed definition introversion means "withdrawal from other people, ranging from intimate relationships to the world at large; restricted affective experience and expression; limited hedonic capacity." That is just the beginning.

I heard references to this recently but it didn’t hit me head on until I received a tweet this a.m.

Blogger Breanne Potter, formerly of the MBTI Blog and now of assessmentbuzz.com told me about the proposed APA (that’s Psychiatric) definition of introversion for the new DSM. It really is, as she says, taking the concept of introversion backwards.

According to their proposed definition introversion means “withdrawal from other people, ranging from intimate relationships to the world at large; restricted affective experience and expression; limited hedonic capacity.” That is just the beginning.

Now to be fair, most psychiatric definitions seem a little strong but this really does paint introversion as pathological.

Read Breanne’s excellent take on how the APA is moving backwards by seeing Introversion as a personality disorder. And, if you feel strongly about it, let the APA know. I expressed my opinion on their website and they acknowledged my input. They are taking comments on this new version of the DSM. You just have to register to comment. Let the psychiatrists know what you think! Introversion is not a problem to be solved.

I happened to see that Eric Clapton, one of my husband’s real life guitar heroes was in town this week. We grabbed some last minute tix near the stage at the Gwinnett arena and had the most incredible night. Along with thousands of other blue jeaned baby boomers, we were transported by his brilliant riffs.

Clapton took us through a journey of his music through the decades. He was very different from the opening act, Roger Daltry (clearly the extrovert ). He never introduced the songs (we all knew them anyway) and only spoke softly to name the band members after their solos.

He didn’t put on foolish grins or try to win us over. He simply was himself, a gifted musican, clearly in his own world. He let his talent speak, or rather play, for itself.

Clapton grew up an introvert. He spent many hours alone with his guitar dealing with a rough childhood, honing his gift. Later on he battled alcohol and drugs. None of that mattered last night. The man and his guitar shined with a quiet grace. I am so grateful I was there to witness it.

Which answer do you think I should rate as “The Best?”
